The Cavern of Smoke

The cities and towns of Nurad are all situated in what they call the Cavern of Smoke. Thought to be one of Autochthon’s Waste Concentration Nodes, the Cavern of Smoke is a large chamber in the shape of a geodesic hemisphere with a 50 mile radius. It is composed of millions of hexagonal cell-panels of Jade and Feathersteel alloys, connected with muscle-wire, conduits, and gaskets all made of Moonsilver and Arlet. Each of these cell panels can move semi-independently of the rest, allowing the structure to flex and change, if needed.

The Cavern itself is situated in a long vertical shaft connected to the Quarantine Layer just above the Pole of Smoke. Out-gassing from the Pole keeps Nurad’s temperature warm and comfortable, though it necessitates a large network of Blue Jade air cleaning artifacts be maintained to ensure that the pollution is kept to a minimum, especially given the clouds. Due to the size of the chamber and the temperature, there is a large amount of cloud formation. The periodic rains serve to produce Nurad’s well known lakes and rivers that flow between the Junk Hills and Sky Pillars.

During the Frontier Era, acid rain was a constant problem, but the air filter network has kept it under control for thousands of years. Recently though, it has been decided that some of the more outlying areas of the filter network aren’t sufficiently critical to merit the regular maintenance checks they need, so pollution levels are on the rise.
